The music fades behind you. You’re walking through a hallway towards the exit. It’s been a long night… unforgettable even.

It’s that time of day, again. The sun is rising but the city is still asleep. The music keeps circulating in your mind. A driving tune with a rhythm you just can’t shake.
It takes you on a minimal techno journey, no matter whether you take a cab, the subway or are walking. The entire world around you bows down to the rhythm in your head.

Yes, definitely unforgettable.

“After concentrating on establishing a network following his move from the United States back to his native Germany, Thomas Radman finally gave himself the time and peace to create something new.
“On My Own” depicts the sometimes monotone and lonely road of huge life changing events. At the same time keeping a rhythmic groove that chugs along, just like one has to do him- or herself when facing and overcoming new situations in life.

The move to Germany has left its mark. The usual high energy electro sound from the states, Thomas Radman is known for, makes room for a slightly dark and Berlin underground inspired Techno ensemble bordering on Techhouse… two directions he is looking forward to exploring further in the near future.”

The Lost Art of the Mixtape

Were you born before the 90s? Then you’ve most likely done everything described below at least once.

Before iPods, iPhones or even burning CDs of Napster ripped music we had to improvise to fill that walkman with our favorite tracks. I’m talking about making yourself a cassette tape of your favorite songs using a double tape deck boom box, stereo system or recorder.

cassette-what-is-cd

Here is a little play by play of how I used to create my “playlists” when I was a kid:

Step 1
First I would buy packs of empty tapes and record my favorite songs right off the radio. These recorded sessions would be full of commercials and radio DJs announcing this and that, but in between the music was pure sound, …well as pure as ripped tape quality got.

Step 2
Once I had a set of radio tapes, I had the material to record my new cassette mix. Don’t forget the already purchased albums on tape, which were also used as a source of music.

Step 3
Syncing up the tapes and pressing play/rec at the same time and having to listen to the entire song until it was done recording live onto the empty tape was quite the process and could take hours… It gave these tapes a certain personal worth that a burnt cd already lacked from the start and an mp3 never even reached.

Step 4
Give the cassette a name: (These are some of the actual names I used…)

Tommy’s Rock
Hip Hoppin
For your ears only
KissFM Midnight

It cracks me up remembering these 😀

I feel about cassettes the same way some people feel about vinyl. And I bet future generations are gonna feel the same about mp3s (somehow) once music is reduced to cloud libraries accessible simply by thought.

And don’t forget: All you can give the girl you’re into in a cloud driven world is a spotify playlist…. this can never replace a physical gift of thought and labor.. never.

I would love to hear your mixtape stories.

cheers

Recycling old equipment.

Any producer knows how cool new shiny musical toys are. That kid in a candy store feeling is all too familiar. The only thing is that a piece of candy in our line of work can easily start at a couple of hundred bills and upward.

So it’s not the most uncommon thing to start rigging. In this case I have my old trusty headphones I’ve used for over ten years as a DJ. Anyone who DJed during that time knows the Silver Sony MDR-V700. Anyone who’s used them also knows that these headphones had two issues:

  1. The rotating joint liked to crack if you are of the more enthusiastic type or just careless.
  2. That the fake leather ear cushions started to get brittle and flake after extended use. This would lead to a sweaty neck full of black pleather flakes after sets.

I never had an issue with number 1, I was pretty careful, but number 2 I think know one got around and neither did I. But I got them out of retirement:

This is not the first time I changed the cushions. I’ve ordered the factory cushions twice already during the lifetime of these headphones. It was time for something else. I found that you can buy fabric replacements online. In many different colors too. So I ordered a red pair for about a 20 (instead of brand new headphones) and I am super satisfied.
These things feel soft and comfortable and I don’t see this material deteriorating like the factory version did.

So sometimes it pays off to look around for a different solution and now I can spend the money on actual candy equipment or virtual instruments instead. 😌

cheers

Creating the World’s biggest digital Choir

So an old friend of mine, and really someone who supported my very early production years with tips, tricks, critique and of course a shit load of software, decided to take his wife plus the rest of his team on the road and record voices for a digital choir all across the US.

The goal is an ensemble of thousands of voices (currently about 400)

Sound like an overly ambitious goal? Well, to help reach this goal they started a little fundraising campaign on Indigogo.

If you feel like this is something that needs to happen, then follow this campaign trail and contribute something:

Project Prayer Song on Indigogo

You can read all about the Project on their Indigogo page, even listen to the song that will incorporate the digital choir once it’s done.

Check out this interview with J. Scott G himself:

And a few last words from the Indigogo Project page:

Can’t Help Financially? That’s OK! But Read On…

Trust us, we soooooo get it. We’re not made of money either, and neither are 99% of most people on earth. (See what we did there?). But, look, this campaign’s success isn’t entirely dependent on every single person we know contributing in a financial aspect. To be honest, what we really need is for people to spread the word. And we’re not talking about Facebook posts. Nope. Statistics show, that Facebook posts about random crowdfunding campaigns have about 1% real world engagement. Yep. Sad isn’t it? Why is that?

Because there’s simply too much white noise on the internet these days for anyone to care. Because the only thing that Facebook likes are good for, is nothing. That’s why. So here’s what you can do…

If you LOVE music, if you see the potential in this project like we do, if you want to help us create something that will be nothing short of magical, then please share this project with the people in your network who are in alignment.

And what we mean by “share” is, call them. Email them. PERSONALLY. Tell them what Project Prayer Song is about and why you’re excited about it. That’s how we can all make this work… by making that personal connection.

Sound familiar? Yeah, exactly. That’s what this whole project is about to begin with. And when human beings realize how powerful REAL HUMAN CONNECTIONS are, we’ll see the world around us transform in a way that we can’t possibly imagine.

Seriously.

Now go be awesome. We believe in you.

Sounds like legit reasoning to me 🙂

Studio Mates

Everyone needs a studio mate or two in their lives.

Sometimes you need to lock the door though… can’t get anything done with Lily and Marie around… but I wouldn’t want to do it without them either.

Here is to the two coolest M-Audio, Ableton and Native-Instruments loving cats in my vicinity.
Keep on rockin with me!
